Video Surveillance System – The Perfect Device To Prevent Dangerous Crimes

Digital video surveillance systems and other video surveillance security systems are a great security measure for any office, as they help to prevent and detect crime, and catch criminals. A surveillance video
system is a deterrent for anyone wishing to commit any crime in the premises. For any business, video surveillance cameras will make most people think twice about any criminal activities they were thinking of committing. People know that a video surveillance system will capture their actions on film, helping to identify and catch the person responsible for the criminal act.

The first video surveillance systems to be installed in the USA were CCTV surveillance systems (closed circuit television) in 1969. These had to be watched by people during the entire time they were running. When video cassette recorders became available, video surveillance security systems became even more widely used, with tapes being used as evidence when crimes were committed.

In the 1980s, video surveillance systems started being widely used in public areas. Businesses, stores and banks also started using them to deter theft and help in the apprehension of criminals. Digital multiplexing became widely available in the 1990s, and many companies and places started using digital video surveillance systems, which had added features that enabled recording of only those events that were important.

Components of a Video Surveillance System

The different components of a video surveillance system will depend largely on the type of video surveillance system you are interested in purchasing. More complex video surveillance systems, like remote video surveillance systems or wireless video surveillance systems, have more components to them than a basic surveillance video system. Some of the components to a video surveillance system include:
  • Video camera or cameras.
  • Recording device.
  • Internet monitoring software.
  • Monitor.
  • Time lapse VCR.
  • Motion sensors. These record only when motion is detected.
  • Battery pack.

Purpose of a Video Surveillance System

There are two main purposes to a video surveillance system. The first and most important one is to deter crime. The second is to help catch criminals when a crime has been committed. Some of the ways a video surveillance system accomplishes both these goals is by doing the following:
  • Monitoring stores and stock
  • Providing a visible presence or warning that video cameras are used in the store
  • Recording any crimes that are committed
  • Allowing people to monitor the cameras and see what is happening at any time of the day
  • Pinpointing exact times when crimes have been committed
  • Providing an identification method, by which people can be screened before entering a building
  • Allowing security personnel to check who is in a building at any time.
