Access Control – Extraordinary Applications of Finger Key, Hand Key and Hand Reader

Once in a while during our lifetime, we find ourselves looking at a science fiction movie with an innovative access control security system. These futuristic security measures may include lasers, unimaginable
sensors, holograms or doors made from an inexistent material. In reality, the private and public sector do have a concern regarding access control and security. As the 21st century progresses, the world depends more and more on information, making it one of the most valuable resources in our economy.

What Is Access Control?

Access control is the method through which organizations assure themselves that only authorized personnel access their installations. They can do it with automatized, human and mixed systems. In the majority of cases, companies use mixed systems, in which the machines check the identity of the individual, but always have a human behind as a backup in case he detects that something is wrong.

In the future, as artificial intelligence progresses, there may come the time when the human factor is completely eliminated and we use intelligent security access control equipment.

Within access control there are three basic processes: identification, authentication and auditing. The first two involve recognizing the user and letting him in. The third one is a bit more complex. All the information regarding user access is stored in the computers. When the organization needs to check the movements of that individual, it will process that information, looking for any inconsistencies. That’s why it’s called auditing.

Access Control Products

Thanks to those same movies that we previously mentioned, many innovators decided to give those ideas a shot, and developed different kinds of security access control system products that could have been science fiction in the past, but are a reality today:

Finger Key

This is the cheapest choice of biometric access control available in the market. They are commonly used in areas accessed by one hundred people, or less, and that have a low volume of traffic. A typical example of finger key use is a lab, where only twenty to thirty scientists work. Due to its small size and convenience, manufacturers of this product have found a huge market in laboratories around the world.

The main disadvantage of this access control security system is that it’s prone to errors. But they are minimized considering that it only manages small groups of people.
